Course Overview

Records and Information Management is key to every business and organizations functioning, and management, with lots of information and records processed either as incoming, or outgoing, and ensuring it is delivered to the appropriate recipient, or stored in the appropriate manner, and location. More to this, Records and Information also come with the responsibility of knowing the level of privilege to access associated with each record, and with the need for observance of data privacy and protection policies where need be.

The efficiency with which records and information is managed within a business or organisation directly impacts on the efficiency by which decision-making processes by management can be made. This calls to the need for specially trained professionals to manage Records and Information in the workplace, hence the relevance of this course. The digital age opening up and broadening the scope of tasks associated with Records, Achieves, and Information, in what can be termed as the error of Information Explosion further justifies the need and relevance of this skill in the workplace.

General Objectives

To provide foundation education and training for students who are seeking to start a career in Records and Information Management, equipping them with knowledge and skills that match the dynamics of the 21st century workplace.

Specific Objectives

The Records and Information Management Programme will have the following objectives:

  1. To educate and train students in Records and Information Management
  2. To equip students with knowledge and skills in managing different types of Information
  3. To equip students with sufficient skills to effectively man registries in Institutions and organizations and where there are institutional Records Center, Archives, Documentation and Information Centres, among others
  4. To produce enough manpower to man the ever-growing information and records sector for businesses, and organizations arising from the Information Explosion in the 21st Century, either as employees, or as private consultants
  5. To provide a foundation for students who desire to seek further education and training in the speciality and profession of Records Management, Archivists, Documentalists and Information Officers

Students who undertake this program will have careers in the records, archiving, and Information management service sectors of employment and opportunities, ranging from Archivists, Records Officers, Communication Officers, Micrographics Technicians, Conservators, Information & Records Officers, among others in Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Local Governments, Academic Institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), business enterprises and establishments.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Option A

The Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least 5 credits obtained at the same sitting, or it’s equivalent..

Option B

A Certificate from a recognized institution of learning within the same, or in a related field.
