1.1 Background

Increased use of computers in business operations has created demand for computing specialists with business and management skills. Students on the BBC degree programme will develop conceptual and practical I.T skills in integrating financial, organizational, marketing and production/service function with an overall business strategy in addition to acquiring specialized vocational training in the given area of interest. This course aims at providing students with the opportunity to acquire a thorough knowledge in the fundamentals of computer science; core business and management skills. It combines core modules in computer science and business management. These will include accounting software, networks, databases, systems security, human resource management, financial management and the business environment. Graduates of BBC will be ‘hybrid‘ managers, with skills in computing, business management, and vocational studies.

1.2 Programme Rationale

The changes that have taken place in the global economy in the last 20 years have been driven primarily by businesses in their search for competitive advantage. Businesses have come up with new products driven primarily by new technologies, the challenges require human resources equipped with both business and information technolgy skills. A central element in business has been the computer. Most of the processes in business have been computerized including accounts, human resources databases, production processes, invoicing and data collection.

The process of computerizing in the country has been slow because of the high cost of computers. However many of the organizations have now acquired computers and are adapting their businesses to modern computerized businesses.

This programme is intended to provide people who can assist not only in the process of computerized business processes but help to run the computers themselves in business organizations.

1.3 Course Objectives

The Bachelor of Business Computing Programme aims to:

  1. To Provide professional guidance in the selection and implementation of ICT projects;
  2. To Address the increasing demand for ICT literate business professionals;
  3. To leverage ICT technologies as a strategic asset in business and organizations;
  4. To Make appropriate business decisions for ICT investments;
  5. To Provide business solutions and professionals in Uganda and Africa at large;
  6. To Add business value by effectively applying modern ICT technologies in business and organizations;

1.4 Programme Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme, the students should be able; –

  1. To Identify and implement ICT Projects for organizations.
  2. To Apply ICT knowledge and skills to facilitate organizational decision making.
  3. To Provide ICT advisory services within an organization.
  4. To deal with challenges of the changing global business environment
  5. To exhibit technical skills and competencies required in an undertaking or managing business as specialized area, for example Marketing, Accounting and Human Resource Management

1.5 Career Prospects

BBC graduates are ideally placed to work either in the business software industry and developing the use of IT in business. Others will take up Managerial positions in ICT- based sectors, and other positions such as Web-Designers, business planners, Systems Analysts, Project Managers, and Lecturers. Others take up further studies in Business Computing; while others will use the vocational skills acquired in this course to start up their own business. Possible employers range from consulting firms to ICT users such as the government, banks and insurance industry. The course also trains students to become entrepreneurs and start their own businesses with aid of ICT’s and vocational studies. Others will take up further studies in Information Technology related courses.

2. The Programme.

2.1. Target group

The Programme targets three categories of people, namely A’ level certificate holders, Diploma holders in relevant Programmes, Mature entry students and Higher education certificate holders (HEC).

2.2. Nature and duration of the Programme

This is a full time day and evening privately sponsored programme. There will also be the evening program that shall be only privately sponsored.

The duration for the Bachelor of Business Computing (BBC) degree programme are three (3) academic years comprising 6 semesters and two recess terms.

3.0. Admission Requirements

In order to be admitted for this Course, a candidate must satisfy the general minimum entry requirements of Multitech Business School in addition to the following shall hold: –

3.1 Direct Entry.

A candidate must satisfy the general minimum entry requirements of Multitech Business School. In addition, the following regulations shall hold:

Candidates seeking admission through this avenue must have obtained: –

  1. The Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent, with credits in English and Mathematics.
  2. At least two principal passes at the same sitting in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) in any two subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Literature, Entrepreneurship, Technical Drawing and Fine Art).

3.2 Diploma Holders

  1. At least any second Class (lower division) diploma from a recognized institution.
  2. Candidates who hold a Diploma in Computer Science or Information Technology from Multitech Business School with at least second class (lower division) shall be admitted to second year of Bachelor of Information Technology. Candidates who hold a pass class of the same diploma shall be admitted to first year of Bachelor of Information Technology.

3.3 Mature Age Entry

For admission under the Mature Age Entry Scheme, a candidate must pass the Mature Age Entry Examinations of a recognized sitting Centre for the Bachelor of Business Computing Degree.

3.4 Higher Education Certificate (HEC)

Holders of a higher education certificate from an institution recognized by national council for higher education.
