Introduction
This course aims at providing students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge in the basic computer science and Business Computing in order to facilitate decision marking within an organization.Â
The Diploma in Business Computing (DBC) programme is intended to equip students with basic business computing skills and skills in information technology. This combination of skills and knowledge prepares students to be immediately productive in the modern industry.

1.2 Programme Rationale
The changes that have taken place in the global economy in the last 20 years have been driven primarily by businesses in their search for competitive advantage. Businesses have come up with new products driven primarily by new technologies.
A central element in business has been the computer. Most of the processes in business have been computerized including accounts, human resources databases, production processes, invoicing and data collection.
This programme is intended to provide students who can assist not only in the process of computerized business processes but help to run the computers themselves in business organizations.

The programme is particularly intended to introduce students to various aspects in business computing as shown below;

- To leverage ICT technologies as a strategic asset in business and organizations;
- To Add business value by effectively applying modern ICT technologies in business and organizations;

1.5 Career Prospects
Diploma in Business Computing graduates are ideally placed to work either in the business software industry and developing the use of Information Technology in the business industry. Others will take up operational positions in ICT- based sectors, and other positions such as Web-
Designers, Network & Systems Administrators, Data Analysts, and Data Administrators. Others take up further studies in Business Computing. Possible employers range from consulting firms to ICT users such as the government, banks and insurance industry. The course also trains students to become entrepreneurs and start their own businesses with aid of ICT’s. Others will take
up further studies in Information Technology related courses.
The programme provides for a wide range of career paths is including specific IT-related positions  and  also  roles  combining  Information Technology with general Business Management. There is a growing demand within the industry to have key business management positions filled with personnel who can make best productive use of their IT facilities and use them for strategic advantage.
Programme duration.
The diploma programme shall cover a minimum of two (2) years of four semesters and not exceeding a maximum of four (4) years.
Admission into this programme can be through any of the four avenues mentioned below:
- Direct entry
- Certificate holders scheme
- Higher Education Certificate
- Professional qualifications
- Entrance admission examination
For admission to any diploma course under
- Direct Entry Scheme, a candidate must have:
- Obtained at least one (1) advanced level principal pass and two (2) subsidiary passes obtained at the same sitting of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (U.A.C.E) examinations. Or Qualification equivalent to UACE.
- Sat the UCE examination (equivalent) and obtained at least 5 passes.
- Certificate Holder’s Scheme, a candidate must hold:
- A Uganda Certificate of Education (U.C.E) and a certificate in Business Management or equivalent from a recognized institution.
- A two year certificate in Business Management, or a two year certificate in any field of study obtained from a recognized institution.
- A one year Higher Education Certificate accredited by NCHE
- Professional Qualifications.
- The applicant should have passed at least stage/level two (2), of the professional qualifications from a recognized institution or its equivalent, provided this is passing by examination and recognized in Uganda by the National Council of Higher Education
