Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration

1.1 Programme Rationale

In the wake of the increasing demand for professionals needed in various functions and management of government affairs at all levels. The Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration and Management (PGDPAM) is therefore designed to produce graduates that can help transform society and community into a better place to live. The programme will equip graduates with strong critical skills, thinking skills deducing reasoning, analytical, communication and fundraising skills so that they are able to satisfy publicly determined needs in order to achieve the good life.

1.2 Course Objectives

The objectives of the programme are:

1. To provide adequate basic understanding about public service management to the students
2. To help students acquire an awareness of the political forces that shape public policy and administration
3. To help students gain an understanding of the political and public environment in which public service professionals work
4. To help student develop analytical, administrative, managerial, and communication skills that are directly applicable to the area of public administration.

Upon completion of the programme, graduates should be able to;

1. Describe the basic principles of public administration
2. Describe the political and public environment in which public service professionals operate.
3. Explain the political forces that shape the public policy and administration and provide appropriate solutions.
4. Describe theories and approaches in the study of public management

1.5 Career Prospects

Graduates of PGDPAM will find prospects in a number of field ranging from public services, Non-Governmental organisations (NGOs), community development, Liaison offices,; community and disability organisations; diplomatic services etc.

2.0 Entry requirements.

Admission into the post graduate programmes requires a candidate to possess/must have a good University degree or its equivalent from recognized institution or university

2.1 Programme duration.

The Post graduate diploma programme shall cover a period of one year.
